Although a person may not enjoy a gold-plated light switch, they still have a working light switch. Not all toilets have heated seats, but a toilet seat remains available to most people, except those in jail or prison, There are stark inequalities in our society; however, the point arising from the above is that perception of inequalities have more to do with personal growth and outcomes than the reality of inequalities. Most people have the ability to read, write, comprehend, think critically, and grow intellectually and morally. Incidentally, Orange County has employees in need of this approach, I've learned. How do we cause our educational system to instill these personal values as a way of life? Our reality in education points to genuine inequalities, but even here the perceptual power of "poor schools" over simplifies the facts. Many failing students arrive at school unprepared to learn or receive needed guidance from parents. (return) Television, games, and poor parenting do more harm in public education than poor schools. Few people in the United States are deprived of access to books, reading, and writing. That people do not avail themselves of these resources remains a family issue. Until society deems parenting skills important enough to create parenting skills themes from the first through the last years of public education, perception of inequalities will continue to inhibit education growth in the United States. Until such outcomes become as important as funding the military-corporate state, youth violence will grow.
